Fall is here and in full effect! While the temperature drops, there’s no denying that our bodies are going through changes too. Now is prime time to protect our precious skin from dryness. Lucky for us, the motherland has blessed us with natural remedies to combat dull skin. Here is a list of must-have African ingredients to add to your fall skincare regimen:

1.Shea Butter

This is a crowd favorite when it comes to African skin care. Shea butter comes from the Karite tree, aka the Shea tree. It grows naturally in 19 countries spanning from Ethiopia to Senegal. This span is also referred to as the “Shea Belt”. Shea butter is known for being a deep moisturizer consisting of fatty acids, vitamin A, E, and F. It can smooth the appearance of stretch marks, reduce blemishes and wrinkles, and restore your skin's elasticity.

 

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is another popular skincare pick. It originates from the Arabian Peninsula but became naturalized in countries like Sudan, Somalia, and Cape Verde. When this succulent is broken off, its gel possesses various healing properties for your skin. It consists of enzymes, vitamin A and C. It’s also a soothing anti-inflammatory that can fight acne and exfoliate your skin.  

3. Mafura Butter

Mafura butter comes from the Mafura tree found in southern Africa, predominantly in Zimbabwe. This butter is rich in antioxidants and fatty acids.Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties are great for moisturizing skin without clogging up your pores. It also stimulates cell regeneration for youthful looking skin.

4. Baobab Oil

Baobab oil comes from the Baobab tree commonly found in southern African countries like Mozambique, South Africa, and Botswana. This oil has potent antioxidants and is very lightweight. This is great for both normal and dry skin because they can easily absorb it. Its vitamin A and fatty acids help with skin regeneration and its vitamin E helps fight severe dry skin.

5. Mongongo Oil

If you don’t know, now you know. Meet the kale of skincare! If you are looking for your next super oil, this is for you. This oil is produced from the Manketti tree found in sub-Saharan Africa and is amazing for skin health. In addition to it being high in antioxidants, Mongongo oil is best known for its acidic makeup. Its linoleic acids help with reducing inflammation in the skin. So for those who have redness or eczema, this is an oil that can help. Its alpha-Eleostearic acid serves as a sun protectant so it can also help block UV rays.
